109-Metre O3 Begins a New Chapter in Explorer Yachting
10 July 2026

Lürssen’s 109-metre O3 has departed Hamburg, bringing a long-running explorer project into service and underscoring continued demand for capable long-range yachts.
The delivery of the 109-metre **O3** marks the completion of one of the most closely followed large explorer-yacht programmes of recent years. The vessel departed Lürssen’s Hamburg facilities in June 2026 before beginning her maiden voyage in northern European waters.
Previously known in the industry as Project Icecap, the yacht was originally sold in 2018 and underwent design changes during construction. That extended timeline reflects the complexity of a vessel at this scale, where owner requirements, technical systems, classification and global-cruising ambitions must be reconciled across a multi-year build.
O3’s explorer profile points toward a continuing shift in the very-large-yacht market. Owners are asking for platforms that can support longer seasons, varied climates and more autonomous itineraries while still providing the comfort, service and finish expected of a full-custom Lürssen.
The first movements after delivery included a stop in Kristiansand and cruising along the Danish coast, according to BOAT International. These early passages are a practical transition from yard trials and acceptance into real-world owner operation.
For buyers considering a large new-build project, O3 is also a reminder that programme governance matters as much as styling. Clear decision-making, disciplined change control and experienced technical representation are essential when a project’s design evolves during construction.
